Serious about music ... serious about the liberal arts
Connecticut College offers excellence in music programming and performances for enjoyment and enrichment by musicians and music enthusiasts from the College, the surrounding community and the world.
As a student, you'll find that the College has distinguished itself among the nation's music departments with a curriculum modeled on the best features of both the music conservatory and a liberal arts school of music, offering:
- Six full-time faculty and 22 part-time faculty who are some of the finest trained musicians and scholars.
- Free music lessons for students who demonstrate a moderate facility with their instrument, thanks to the generosity of the Jack Niblack '98 Music Lessons Fund.
- A variety of ensembles in which to perform: orchestra, concert band, chamber choir, jazz band, chamber music, musical theater ensemble, and percussion.
Music lovers and musicians from anywhere can enjoy:
- Public performances by music students — an essential part of the educational experience — and faculty. Individual students or ensembles present concerts each semester.
- Visits by internationally renowned performers, composers, and scholars who regularly offer master classes and lectures. Among them: Larry Austin, Emanuel Ax, Milton Babbitt, Pierre Boulez, Frances Blaisdell, Shirlee Emmons, Eliot Fisk, Gary Glaze, Stephen Hinton, Lev Koblyakov, Fred Lerdahl, Allan Neave, Itzak Perlman, Bernard Rands, Paula Robison, and Ben Verdery.
- onStage Guest Artist Series at Connecticut College, bringing world-class dance, music, art and theater performances and events to our stages and concert halls.
- A biennial Symposium on Arts & Technology, a major international conference devoted to presenting the edge and exploring the increasing links in the interdisciplinary world of arts, sciences, media, and technology. There are speakers, panels, and concerts that include electro-acoustic music.
