As a component of the World Languages and Cultures (WLC) requirement, students who achieve advanced-level proficiency in a language and who apply their language in an international or other practical context may have this noted on their academic transcript.  To apply to receive the designation of “Language Engagement Scholar” on their transcripts, students should submit a completed application form by May 1 of the senior year to the chair of the appropriate language department. For languages not housed in a department, students apply to the Associate Dean for Global Initiatives. 

Students must complete two courses at the appropriate level with a grade of “B” (3.0) or higher to demonstrate advanced-level proficiency in a language.  Courses taken abroad or at another institution may be used to fulfill this requirement with the approval of the appropriate department chair or associate dean of global initiatives.  The required courses are:

  • Ancient Greek:  two 4-credit courses at the 300-level or above
  • Arabic:  two 4-credit courses at the 300-level or above
  • Chinese:  two 4-credit courses at the 300-level or above
  • French:  two 4-credit courses at the 300-level or above
  • German:  see department for information
  • Italian:  two 4-credit courses at the 300-level or above (see department for specifics)
  • Japanese:  two 4-credit courses at the 300-level or above
  • Latin:  two 4-credit courses at the 300-level or above
  • Russian, Polish, Bulgarian:  two 4-credit advanced courses (see department for specifics)
  • Spanish:  two 4-credit courses at the 300-level or above

Students must also demonstrate that they have applied their language in an international or other practical context.  Sample experiences that demonstrate application of language skills include:

  • Participation in study away and SATA programs that include a language component
  • Completion of an internship or volunteer experience that draws upon language skills
  • Completion of an honors thesis or SIP that draws upon language skills
  • Experience serving as a language tutor
  • Experience serving as a language teacher at local schools
  • Extraordinary engagement with campus and/or community activities related to the language
  • (for Asian languages) completion of a 4-credit language course each semester until graduation
  • Other experiences, with the approval of the department chair
