Theater majors present capstone projects
The Connecticut College Department of Theater presents three productions from theater majors who will graduate next month as members of the Class of 2014.
In creating these capstone projects, theater majors employed the specific focus of their individual academic careers, whether writing, performing or directing. They are assisted in the productions by student performers, crew members, stage managers and publicists, and mentored by members of the department faculty.
“Barely Naked,” created and performed by Jacob Rosenbaum ’14, is a performance piece that follows the journey of an awkward boy on a search for courage and love in a theatrically inspired, physically driven and glitter-filled world.
“Medea of Gaza,” written by Julian Gordon ’14 as part of his honors thesis, dissects war's transformative power over the sorceress from Greek mythology and her decision to commit an act of terrorism while simultaneously ending the lives of her children. Julia Larsen ’14 is taking on the central role of Medea as her capstone and the performance component of her honors thesis.
In “Seminar,” written by Broadway veteran Theresa Rebeck and directed by Scott Pulvirent ’14, four writers take a writing seminar taught by a man with methods to his madness.
“These capstone projects represent the culmination of these students’ college careers, but may also serve as a starting point for future work,” said David Jaffe ’77, chair of theater and faculty adviser for the productions. “Jacob, Julian, Julia and Scott are adventurous and creative young artists. They have contributed so much to the department and community, it’s rewarding for the department to see its new capstone program launched by this group.”
“Barely Naked” and “Medea in Gaza” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26. “Seminar” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, and Friday, May 2. All performances are in Tansill Theater. Admission is free and open to the public.
