‘The Vagina Monologues’ to raise funds for local, global women’s organizations

Students, staff and faculty of Connecticut College will perform in “The Vagina Monologues” on Friday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2 and 7 p.m. in Evans Hall of Cummings Arts Center.

The play, a series of monologues, was written and first performed by playwright and performer Eve Ensler in the mid-1990s. In 1998, she helped launch V-Day, a global nonprofit movement working to end violence against women and girls. Ensler allows groups around the world to perform “The Vagina Monologues” during V-Season (Feb. 1- April 30) to raise money for V-Day and local organizations and programs with the same mission.

The performance at the College will benefit Safe Futures, Inc., formerly the Women's Center of Southeastern Connecticut, which operates two 24-hour hotlines, an emergency shelter and a transitional living program for families working to rebuild lives shattered by domestic violence or sexual assault. In addition, the performance will benefit One Billion Rising, an international movement started by Ensler to end violence against women and girls. Last year, the Connecticut College performance raised $10,000 for these organizations. This year’s goal is $15,000, so the producers have added a third show to help them reach it.

This is the 12th anniversary of the College’s production of the play. Tickets are $8 for Connecticut College students and $10 for the general public, and can be purchased at the door before each performance. Tickets can also be purchased in advance in the lobby of the College Center at Crozier-Williams from noon to 5 p.m. Feb. 17-21.
