44 inducted into Phi Beta Kappa
Phi Beta Kappa, America’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society, has 44 new members from Connecticut College’s Class of 2018.
Since its founding in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa has championed education, fostered freedom of thought and recognized academic excellence. Only 10 percent of U.S. colleges and universities have Phi Beta Kappa chapters and each chapter selects only 10 percent of its arts and sciences graduates to join. The Delta of Connecticut Chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Society was installed at Connecticut College on February 13, 1935.
Each year, the College selects a small group of exceptional scholars for Phi Beta Kappa membership in February. These seniors receive the designation of Winthrop Scholar, the highest academic honor bestowed by the College.
This year, 14 Winthrop Scholars and 30 graduating seniors were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at a ceremony during Commencement weekend. The ceremony featured remarks by chapter president and Professor of Philosophy Lawrence Vogel; chair of the membership committee, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Associate Dean of the College for Curriculum Christopher Hammond; chapter historian and Assistant Professor of English Michelle Neely; and Associate Dean of the College Marina Melendez.
At the ceremony, Geoffrey Babbitt ’03 was honored as the 2018 Phi Beta Kappa Poet. Babbitt is the author of Appendices Pulled from a Study on Light, which was a finalist for the Colorado Prize for Poetry, the Robert Kroetsch Award in Innovative Poetry, the Richard Snyder Memorial Publication Prize, the Madeleine P. Plonsker Innovative Poetry First Book Prize and the New Measure Poetry Prize. His poems and essays have appeared in many literary journals, including North American Review, Pleiades, Colorado Review, DIAGRAM, Notre Dame Review, TYPO, Tarpaulin Sky and The Collagist. Babbitt holds a Ph.D. from the University of Utah and is now an Assistant Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Hobart & William Smith Colleges, where he coedits Seneca Review.
Three alumni and one member of the Class of 2018 were also awarded Phi Beta Kappa scholarships for graduate study. The 2018 recipients are Sophia DeLevie-Orey ’15, who is pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing from Yale University; Dominique D’Onofrio ’18, who is pursuing a Master of Arts in Transnational Crime, Justice and Security from the University of Glasgow; Sarah Joelson ’15, who is pursuing a Doctor of Psychology from Stanford University School of Medicine; and Jordan Thomas ’15, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles.
