College to host lecture on solar and wind energy

Connecticut College, a national leader among colleges and universities in environmental issues, will host a talk on Friday, April 15 by David Cohen entitled "Solar and Wind Energy for your Home, Campus and Community." Cohen is a regional manager with Alteris Renewables, a renewable energy provider serving the Northeast. He'll address residential- and commercial-scale solar and wind applications and the different technologies, incentives, financing options and net metering (which enables utility customers to offset their energy use with self-produced renewable energy). "Renewable energy technologies are an appealing alternative and a renewable energy assessment is under way on campus to examine the possibilities, among them wind and solar energy," said Amy Cabaniss, campus environmental coordinator. "In addition to a 10 kilowatt solar array atop one of its residence halls, Connecticut College will consider other potential applications. Dave Cohen's talk will address these technologies and include discussion of rebates and financing. Interest in decreasing greenhouse gas emissions extends outward as students also head to Washington, D.C., to be a part of the national youth climate summit, Power Shift." The April 15 talk is at 11:50 a.m. in Blaustein Humanities Center Room 210. It is hosted by the College's Goodwin-Niering Center for the Environment and is free and open to the public.
