Jack Tinker, pre-law adviser, Connecticut College As director of recruiting, Jack Tinker has spent much of his 20 years at Connecticut College building relationships with employers.

But it's the time he's spent with students that he values the most.

Whether helping students prepare grad school applications or navigate a job search, it's been rewarding to help people achieve their dreams. He has worked with more than 10,000 Connecticut College alumni, as well as alumni at Yale and the University of Michigan, where he was previously employed.

Looking back, Tinker has seen many changes in the job market.

“The biggest changes I’ve experienced over the years have to do with the evolution of technology. For the job seeker, this involves things like creating a scannable resume, applying for positions online, and using social media in one’s job search.”

But many parts of the job search process remain the same. No matter the industry or the application process, Tinker advises students to arm themselves with knowledge. His advice:

* “Research the organization thoroughly and bring the fact that you have done so out in the interview. Go into some depth; don’t just glance at their website.”

* Think creatively. Networking is one key to a successful search, but there is often no straight path to success.

* Work hard. “You have to be willing to put the time in and don’t let rejections discourage you. Use every strategy possible as you never know which one will come through for you.”

The career office is planning to begin a search for a new member of their team soon, but it will not be easy. Says Deb Dreher, associate dean for fellowships and scholarships, “Jack is the college’s pre-law advisor, pre-business advisor, director of recruiting and career advisor to many students; his experience, expertise and work ethic will make it very difficult to fill his shoes.”

As for Tinker, though he will miss the special relationships he has formed at the College, he is eager to start the next chapter in his life. He plans to pursue his passion for writing and hopes to continue working in the career field on a part-time basis. And he’s looking forward to warmer days where he can play a little golf.
