Enjoy the excitement of theater, the intrigue of contemporary Chinese art and the sounds of 'Pirates' this May

Whether you enjoy the excitement of live theater or the intrigue of contemporary Chinese art, Connecticut College offers a wide variety of thought-provoking performances and events this May. Upcoming events include the Theater Department's production of Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House," concerts, art exhibits, student presentations and the annual Arboretum Mother's Day plant sale. All events are open to the public and free, unless otherwise noted. The schedule of events is: • Now-June 11: "Over the Wall: China-ism in Contemporary Art World," an exhibit featuring contemporary Chinese art, Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room, Shain Library. • May 2: "Senior Violin Recital with Sarah Haspiel and Amy Rubinger," noon, Fortune Hall. • May 2: "Connecticut College Concert Band Performance," featuring music from "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Amistad," 7 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. Gary Buttery, adjunct assistant professor of music, will direct. Tickets are $5 for general admission, $3 for students and seniors and free for Connecticut College students with ID. • May 3: "Student Strings Recital," 4 p.m., Fortune Hall, Cummings Arts Center. • May 4: "The Good, the Bad and the Reality of Environmentally Friendly Consumption," by Matthew Kotchen, associate professor of environmental economics and policy at Yale University, 4:30 p.m., Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room, Shain Library. • May 4: "Connecticut College Orchestra Concert," directed by Adjunct Assistant Professors of Music Anthea Kreston and Jason Duckles, 7 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. Tickets are $5 for general admission, $3 for students and seniors and free for Connecticut College students with ID. • May 6-9: "A Doll's House," a Connecticut College Theater Department production directed by senior Julia Berman, 8 p.m. on May 6, 7 and 8 and 2 p.m. on May 8 and 9, Tansill Theater. Tickets are $8 for general admission. • May 7: "It's All about Mom," the annual Mother's Day plant sale hosted by the Connecticut College Arboretum, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., outside of the College Center at Crozier-Williams (rain location: inside of Crozier-Williams). Geraniums, hydrangeas, New Guinea impatiens and assorted container gardens designed by Arboretum staff and volunteers will be for sale. • May 7: "Holleran Center Scholars Class of 2012 Community Learning Presentations," 11:30 a.m., Blaustein Humanities Center Room 210. Senior student scholars will present their projects, which address a range of topics from assessing local access to health care to developing and implementing an after school enrichment program at New London's Regional Multicultural Magnet School. • May 7: "Annual Wildflower Walk," with Glenn Dreyer, the Charles and Sarah P. Becker '27 Director of the Arboretum, executive director of the Goodwin-Niering Center for the Environment and adjunct associate professor of botany, noon, meet at the Arboretum outdoor theater. Bring a bag lunch to eat by the pond. Registration is not required but suggested. To register, contact Elene Anthopolos at (860) 439-5020. • May 7-23: "Transmutation," featuring artwork by Connecticut College senior art majors. The exhibition is on display in the galleries of the college's Cummings Arts Center. The galleries are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The student artists will discuss their work at an opening reception in the galleries May 7 at 5 p.m. • May 10: "Student Chamber Music Recital," 4 p.m., Fortune Hall, Cummings Arts Center. • May 10: "The Neural Underpinnings of Prosody in Autism: A Functional MRI Study," a Psychology Department Spring 2010 Colloquium Series presentation by Inge-Marie Eigsti, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Connecticut, 4:30 p.m., Silfen Auditorium, Bill Hall. • May 11: "Charles Shackford Memorial Student Composers Concert," directed by Arthur Kreiger, the Sylvia Pasternack Marx Professor of Music at Connecticut College, 6:30 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. • May 13: "Percussion and New Music Ensemble in Concert," directed by Peter Jarvis, adjunct assistant professor of music, 7 p.m., Evans Halls, Cummings Arts Center. Tickets are $5 for general admission, $3 for students and seniors and free for Connecticut College students with ID. • May 13: "The English Department's Senior Honors Theses Presentations," 7:30 p.m., Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room, Shain Library. A reception will follow the presentations. • May 14: "Ammerman Center Senior Projects," featuring projects by senior scholars in Connecticut College's Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, 4 p.m., Olin 014. Projects include animation, virtual musical instruments, virtual reality walk-throughs and audio processing tools. A reception will follow in Olin 214.
