onStage presents Sara Juli’s ‘Tense Vagina,’ Feb. 10
Connecticut College’s onStage Guest Artist Series presents two performances of “Tense Vagina: an actual diagnosis,” by modern dancer and choreographer Sara Juli, in Tansill Theater on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
“Tense Vagina: an actual diagnosis” is about motherhood—its beauty, challenges, isolation, comedy and influence on the human experience. This solo performance employs humor, movement, sounds, songs, text and audience participation.
Juli, who creates and performs solo works informed by daily life, combines elements of concert dance, comedy and storytelling in her shows. “Tense Vagina” was conceived while she reflected on her own experiences as a mother of two, with all the related joys, stresses and dilemmas, both tragic and comic.
Juli is no stranger to the Connecticut College stage. The daughter of Harold Juli, an anthropology professor who taught at the College for 33 years before his death in 2009, Juli made her debut performance at Conn at age 3 as part of the Children’s Dance Center. Her most recent production at the College was “The Money Conversation,” a 2007 performance piece about her relationship with money in which Juli gave away her own savings to a sold-out house.
“Tense Vagina” focuses on the seldom-discussed and taboo aspects of motherhood, such as loss of bladder control, libido, tears, monotony, loneliness and dildos. The original set, designed by Rachel Romanski and Allison Bonon, features a dollhouse, a biofeedback machine and a collage of household items. Lighting is by Justin Moriarty and fanciful costumes were designed by Carol Farrell.
