onStage Guest Artist Series presents Regina Carter: ‘Simply Ella’ Oct. 7
With a program that celebrates the centenary of a jazz legend, the onStage Guest Artist Series brings jazz violinist Regina Carter: ‘Simply Ella’ to the Palmer Auditorium stage on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 8 p.m.
Sony Masterworks recording artist Regina Carter is the foremost jazz violinist of her generation. Her newest album, “Ella: Accentuate the Positive,” and touring program, “Simply Ella,” mark the 100th birthday of a musical legend—the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald, the source of Regina’s musical inspiration and an influence she has cherished throughout her life.
"One of the many things that I adore about Ella is that she just loved music and didn't box herself in," Carter explains. "She recorded everything, not just the American Songbook -- doo-wop, Stevie Wonder and Beatles songs, even some country western music. The fact that she experimented with so many different styles made me feel that, with this record, I would pay respect to her by taking the music and doing something else with it. I feel that she would smile in agreement."
This concert will be Regina Carter’s third appearance at Connecticut College. “Each concert program that she has performed here has been dramatically different,” says Robert Richter, Connecticut College’s Director of Arts Programming, “but the constant thread throughout her concerts is her brilliant artistry and musicianship and her ability to bring her audience to their feet.”
In addition, Carter will participate in a free pre-concert “Discussion with the Artist” at 4:30 p.m. in Fortune Recital Hall in Cummings Arts Center.
