“N3w_b0d1es”: A Talk by Lee Blalock, April 3
On Monday, April 3, artist Lee Blalock will discuss her new work, “NeueBody” (or “n3w_b0d1es”), from 4:30-6 p.m. in the F. W. Olin Science Center 014. The final event of the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology 2016-2017 Body and Technology Colloquia Series, the talk is free and open to the public.
Blalock (L[3]^2) is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Art & Technologies Studies Department and the Interim Assistant Director of the Low Residency MFA Program at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Blalock explores what it may mean to live in a computational body, in multiple futures, in an invisible place. Blalock's research includes cybernetics, information, performance, embodiment, technology, computation and systems.
Blalock's work represents the physical, computational, or behavioral body and uses repetition as a strategy to move past the automatic and into something transformative.
"We are excited to host Lee Blalock, an artist whose work straddles a plethora of disciplines and influences, from astronomy to acoustics, from gestural drawing to dance, from cinematic special effects to fashion design and pop music. Blalock, who performs and creates as L[3]^2 (Lee Squared), explores the inexorable transformation of our current bodies into a computational, "post human" future,” said the Center's Associate Director of Events Nadav Assor, assistant professor of art.
The 2016-17 Ammerman Center Colloquia series presents a diverse cast of artists and performers, manifesting and reflecting on the current multiplicity of relationships between Technology and the Body, and the ways these can shape, enhance or control our lives.
