When Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the Oscar recently for best animated feature, it was the culmination of a lengthy and elaborate creative process. The film dazzled audiences and critics alike, taking in more than $375 million at the global box office and garnering a 97% approval rating on Rottentomatoes.com.
As Senior VP of Creative Development for Sony Pictures Animation, Jenny Marchick ’99 is part of the team that has ensured projects like Spider-Verse and the Hotel Transylvania films have achieved enormous commercial success while maintaining the vision and creative integrity of the writers and directors behind the movies.
Marchick likes to joke that her job can be difficult to explain, so she often just tells people she sells insurance.
“The best way to describe what I do is that I shepherd stories through all the different stages it takes to get them from inception to sharing them with the world,” Marchick says.
“My role is to protect and service the story in a way that creates the best product possible for people to see, but that is also something I personally really love and that speaks to me. In that sense, for each project I’m a caretaker for the writer or director’s vision.”
Be sure to catch the full interview with Marchick in the fall issue of CC Magazine.
