An economic analysis of law
Gerald R. Visgilio retired from teaching in 2014. His research and teaching interests include an economic analysis of environmental and natural resource policy, environmental law, environmental justice, and antitrust law and policy.
Gerald R. Visgilio, a professor of economics and on the faculty of the Goodwin-Niering Center for the Environment at Connecticut College, has also been a Visiting Professor at Dartmouth College, Providence College, and the University of Rhode Island. He has been a Fellow of the Yale University Visiting Faculty Program, a Visiting Scholar at Yale Law School, a Visiting Faculty at Brown University's Center for Environmental Studies, and an Economic Consultant to the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Marine Fisheries Service.
Visgilio has co-edited four books:
- Our Backyard: A Quest For Environmental Justice, with Diana Whitelaw, (Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc., 2003), which is listed among the Outstanding Academic Books of 2003 in the January 2004 issue of "Choice" magazine
- America's Changing Coast: Private Rights and Public Trust, with Diana Whitelaw, (Northampton, MA: Edward Elgar Publishing, Inc., 2005), which is part of Edward Elgar's series on Advances in Ecological Economics
- Acid in the Environment: Lessons Learned and Future Prospects, with Diana Whitelaw, (New York: Springer Science+Business Media, LLC. 2007), which is an overview of the science, economics, and policy of acid deposition
- Saving Biological Diversity: Balancing Protection of Endangered Species and Ecosystems, with Robert Askins, Glenn Dreyer, and Diana Whitelaw, (New York: Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, 2008), which focuses on important ecological, economic, philosophical, and legal issues associated with species protection and ecosystem preservation.
Visgilio is also the author of book chapters, book reviews, and journal articles.
His most recent research involves an extension of the textbook model of emission control. Here, he has published the following journal articles: "EMISSION CONTROL: Efficiency in the Textbook Model," Australasian Journal of Economic Education, Volume 7, Number 1, and "Analyzing Emission Compliance in the Textbook Model," Australasian Journal of Economic Education, Volume 10, Number 1.
Visgilio has served Connecticut College outside of the classroom as well. In Spring 2008, he received a Distinguished Service Award from the Goodwin-Niering Center in recognition of his leadership as the Center's Associate Director from 1999 to 2007. As a member of the Goodwin-Niering Center, Visgilio has actively participated in organizing the Center's biennial environmental conferences. He also has served as chair of the following: the Department of Economics, the Advisory Committee (now the Committee on Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure), and the Environmental Model Committee.
