Sustainability Representatives Program
The Sustainability Representatives (Sustainability Reps) Program was created in spring 2012 for students interested in learning more about sustainability and who might not have been very involved with it before coming to Connecticut College.
Each semester, the program incorporates several different monthly themes rooted in projects and events the Sustainability Reps organize in which students work to involve their campus community in specific areas of sustainability. The ultimate goal is to promote and support students to adopt new behaviors that will foster a culture of sustainability on campus. Examples of monthly themes are waste minimization, consumption practices, social equity, and energy conservation.
Sustainability Reps learn to use Community Based Social Marketing as a tool to engage the College community and to promote campus-wide behavior change through programming, events and campaigns. Community Based Social Marking will foster sustainable behavior change across campus because it employs many strategies that go beyond the typical poster campaigns, which fail to effect any positive change within a community.
The Program Leadership Team is comprised of the Manager of Sustainability and two student Program Coordinators, who are responsible for conducting the application process each semester to ensure that the most interested students on campus get to participate in the program, The Program Coordinators are responsible for coordinating all efforts of the Program and facilitating weekly area meetings for Sustainability Reps.
To support a strong connection to the student body, Sustainability Reps are expected to serve on their House Council and build relationships with other student leaders in their houses and areas. By serving on House Councils, Sustainability Reps can provide student leaders on campus with updates about campaigns and events sponsored by the Sustainability Reps Program and the Office of Sustainability Integration.
