What We Do
We build community
Whether students are participating in a community-learning course, looking for a work-study position, or have an idea for a community project, OVCS staff counsel each student on an individual basis to ensure that they are prepared for their community work and are well supported throughout the year. OVCS staff trains student leaders to provide additional and ongoing support to all interns and volunteers. Maintaining strong relationships with community leaders ensures that the partners’ priorities are addressed and that the students have a valuable learning experience.
We encourage student initiative in community-learning programs
Connecticut College OVCS encourages students to be entrepreneurial and creative in their community-learning engagements.
Connecticut College students:
- work with staff, faculty and community members to design and implement projects that address specific challenges
- become program coordinators and work with the OVCS professional staff to direct the programs
- become student coordinators who train student participants, develop program activities, and assess program effectiveness.
We provide transportation
Students work primarily with New London organizations only a few miles away. If transportation poses a challenge for them to engage in community service work, OVCS has a staff of student drivers and 3 vans to help them achieve their commitments.
