When Thom Girard, a computer technician at Connecticut College, lost his house to a fire a little more than a year ago, the college community collected donations to help him and his family through a difficult time. Then, in June, when Thom and his 18-year-old son died in a tragic drowning accident, the college community rallied to help the family. Now, the college is again coming together, this time to help ABC´s "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" build this deserving family a new home.

Fifty-five percent of Conn students study abroad sometime during their college career, but the majority do so in the fall or spring of their junior year (conncoll.edu) Last spring, 12 of those students went through the SATA Vietnam program, while SATA Rome matched its sibling program in popularity. An overwhelming 45 percent of those remaining spent their time in Western Europe, with the most popular countries being Spain, Italy, and France.

With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that among Connecticut College´s many student-run components is Coffee Grounds, a small cafe managed completely by dedicated students. The shop and its workers take great pride in Coffee Grounds´ sense of autonomy, but the space´s recent renovation and a shortage of managers have left the cafe, located on the first floor of Katharine Blunt, working hard to maintain its individualistic character.

Recently, Stanislav Andreev´s business accomplishments caught the attention of the Connecticut General Assembly and Governor M. Jodi Rell. A long-time member of Junior Achievement (JA), an international non-governmental organization that promotes financial, career and business education, Andreev was invited to speak at the organization´s Board of Directors meeting at the State Capitol. The General Assembly was so impressed, they congratulated Andreev with a citation of recognition, and Governor Rell presented him with Letter of Recognition.

For five years, Connecticut College has purchased renewable energy certificates (RECs) that provide a subsidy for production of wind energy equal to a percentage of the college's annual electricity consumption. This year, for the first time, the college is offsetting 100 percent of its annual electricity consumption.
