Connecticut College finishes in Top 25 in RecycleMania

04/23/2010

NEW LONDON, Conn. - For the fifth consecutive year, Connecticut College has finished in the Top 25 in RecycleMania, a 10-week recycling competition that promotes waste reduction among colleges and universities. The college earned 20th place out of 346 schools in the per capita classic, and also finished in fourth overall and first in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) in the Targeted Material - Bottles and Cans category. "The college has an impressive recycling ethic, as our Top 20 finish in the RecycleMania challenge demonstrates," Amy Cabaniss, the college´s campus environmental coordinator, said. RecycleMania also provides the college with an opportunity to make recycling and waste reduction more visible on campus and encourage more participation throughout the year, Cabaniss added. Students helped spread the word around campus through various activities, including a RecycleMania Concert that featured students, professors, alumni and local community members. They also signed recycling pledges and encouraged other students to participate. "I was ecstatic to see so many students interested in RecycleMania and motivated to recycle as much as possible," junior Carra Cheslin, campus RecycleMania coordinator, said. "I am confident that the continuation of Conn´s involvement in the RecycleMania competition will increase recycling efforts on our campus."
