Learn about the classes, programs, and renovations in the common rooms that have shaped the lives of students! Professors will speak about bringing faculty into the common rooms, and will teach a brief master class. Choose your session:

  • 42: The Myths and Realities of the Robinson Narrative
    Meet with Ronald J. O. Flores, associate professor of sociology, to explore the myths and realities of the Robinson Narrative in the film 42.

  • Introducing the DSM 5: What is In, What is Out, and What this Means for Psychiatric Diagnosis and Treatment
    Just this month, the long-awaited 5th revision of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual was finally published (DSM 5). Meet with Audrey Zakriski, associate professor of psychology and department chair, for a discussion of the revision process, the controversies, the final product, and what this means for consumers of mental health services, mental health providers, and the state of the field.

3-3:45 p.m. A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workshop with Amy Gross ’63
Join Amy Gross ’63 in a workshop on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Developed 30 years ago by a molecular biologist Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., at the UMass Medical Center, MBSR has been shown to reduce stress and the need for pain medication, lower emotional reactivity, ease disturbances of sleep and mood, and strengthen the immune system. This workshop offers a taste of the practices used in MBSR and a chance to discuss the principles behind them.

Revisit & Rediscover: Sustainability
3-4 p.m. The Steel House – Where Architecture Meets Sustainability
Come see our recently preserved Steel House, a rare example of early prefab housing manufactured by Chicago-based General Houses Inc. in 1933. The Steel House now serves as the College’s hub for sustainability efforts related to social justice, economic wellbeing, and the environment. Abigail Van Slyck, Dayton Professor of Art History and Associate Dean of the Faculty, and Josh Stoffel, manager of sustainability, will speak about the preservation process and sustainability’s role at the College.

Join Professor Bridget Baird and classmates in a riveting discussion of Gail Collins' book "When Everything Changed: The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to Present."

8 p.m. America: the New Rome - Keynote Presentation with Fernando Espuelas ’88
Fernando Espuelas ’88, a global media entrepreneur who’s been recognized as a rising star by organizations as diverse as CNN and the World Economic Forum, will be the keynote speaker at Reunion this year.

Espuelas is the CEO of Voxgente, a multi-platform media company, and hosts “The Fernando Espuelas Show” on Univision Radio. He is a frequent political analyst on television, radio and online sites including the Huffington Post. His interviews have included Barack Obama and Newt Gingrich.

Espuelas co-founded StarMedia, the first multi-platform digital media company for Latins, and managed the first IPO for a Latin internet company. StarMedia became the most recognized pan-Latin new media brand and one of the top sites in the world.

The World Economic Forum chose Espuelas as a “Global Leader of Tomorrow” in 2000 and he was named a “Leader of the New Millennium” by CNN and Time Magazine. Born in Uruguay, he was a College trustee from 2000 to 2002.

    Marya Ursin, visiting instructor of dance, will lead an energizing session appropriate for all levels of experience and ability.

    Get a workout in the tanks. Learn with Coach Ric Ricci using Concept2 machines.

Shuttles to the Athletic Center depart every 30 minutes from the front of the College Center at Crozier-Williams.

    William Wuyke, a 1980 and 1984 Olympian from Venezuela and the director of the College’s fitness and wellness center, will lead a 5K campus fun run. Don’t worry, the pace will be moderate!

Remember the anonymous class questionnaire that you submitted in the spring?  Julia Kushigian, Professor of Hispanic Studies has analyzed the results of this survey and will speak with the class about trends that she sees and give an overview of the results. She will join the class at 9am.

Stop by the Pink House, home to the CCSRE, to hear about the center’s mission and current projects from Leo J. Garofalo, associate professor of history and the director of the center. This will be followed by an alumni panel discussion with Liza Talusan ’97 (Chair, CCAC), Frank Tuitt '87 (former Trustee) and Leslie Williams ’88 (former director of Unity House) on their experiences with race and ethnicity at the College.

  • Igniting the Sociological Imagination
    Join Afshan Jafar, assistant professor of sociology, for a brief introduction to the sociological perspective and how it’s different from other social sciences. Discussion will touch upon how people select their future mates/partners, demonstrating the significance of thinking sociologically even when analyzing the most private and intimate aspects of our lives.

  • What Does Psychology have to do with Economics?
    Join David Chavanne, assistant professor of economics, for a discussion on the connections between psychology and economics. Demonstrations will be provided to show how these connections are studied and how this knowledge helps us better understand how people behave.

2-3 p.m. 25 Years Later…Perspectives on Innovation  (open to all classes)
Join panelists, from the Class of '88 celebrating their 25th Reunion, as they address where the liberal arts are impacting society today. Speakers include communications entrepreneur Rob Hale (Granite), professor and sociologist Debby Carr (Rutgers University) and education advocate Carlos Garcia (Eng Garcia Group). Sustainability restaurateur and trustee David Barber (Blue Hill) will moderate the discussion. Join in the conversation or just listen to what fellow alumni have achieved since 1988.

2-4 p.m. CCSRE Sponsored Screening & Discussion of "Living Thinkers: An Autobiography of a Community of Women"
Join the Center for the Comparative Study of Race & Ethnicity for a screening and discussion of “Living Thinkers: An Authobiography of a Community of Women” with filmmaker Roxana Walker-Canton, professor of visual and performing arts at Fairfield University. This documentary examines the intersection of race, class, and gender in the experiences of contemporary Black women professors and administrators through their education narratives from girlhood to their present status in academia.

Hildegard Meili Van Deusen was a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors and recipient of the Alumni Tribute Award. Please join family, friends, classmates and Alumni Board members as we remember Hildy, a woman with a warm smile, bright eyes and a quick wit. She was a dear friend to so many and will be deeply missed.

Join Josh Stoffel, manager of sustainability, and current students in a tour and conversation about the history of Sprout Garden, the student-run organic garden. The Garden offers an opportunity for students to become involved in gardening and sustainable agriculture, as well as to provide local, organically grown produce to the campus dining halls.
