Academic Honors Thresholds

For students matriculating in the fall of 2008 and beyond, eligibility for determining Latin honors at graduation and Dean’s Honors/Dean’s High Honors at the end of each semester is based on a system of GPA thresholds that varies slightly from year to year. In the 2014-2015 academic year, the thresholds are as follows:

  • Summa cum laude: 3.88
  • Magna cum laude: 3.77
  • Cum laude: 3.66
  • Dean's High Honors: 3.77
  • Dean's Honors: 3.66

For students who matriculated prior to fall 2008, the thresholds will be as follows:

  • Summa cum laude: 3.80
  • Magna cum laude: 3.67
  • Cum laude: 3.50
  • Dean's High Honors: 3.70
  • Dean's Honors: 3.30

Eligibility for Latin Honors

All graduating students, including those who transfer to the College at the beginning of the junior year, are eligible for Latin Honors on the basis of all undergraduate grades, including those from the freshman year or its equivalent. The relevant grade point average takes into account approved summer courses and study at other institutions, but excludes courses taken with the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory option, courses designated Pass/Not Passed, and courses not accepted for credit toward graduation taken at least 10 years prior to matriculation at the College.

To be eligible for Latin honors, at least 80 percent of the credits completed, including those from the freshman year or its equivalent, must come from graded courses. For the purposes of this calculation, credits earned from Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or British A-level examinations are excluded from the total.
