On April 2, 2011, the Center sponsored a day-long conference on the history and future of diversity at Connecticut College. The conference was open to the public.

The schedule was as follows:
9-9:30 a.m. Continental Breakfast

9:30-9:45 a.m. “Diversity at Connecticut College Today”
Opening remarks by Armando Bengochea, Dean of the College, and Roger Brooks, Dean of the Faculty

9:45-10:00 a.m. “A Historian’s Perspective”
by David Canton, Associate Professor of History and Director of the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity

10:00-11:15 a.m. “Alumni Perspectives on Activism”
A panel discussion with alumni, moderated by David Canton, Estella Johnson '75, Frank Tuitt '87 and Robin Wilson '82

11:45-Noon “Tribute to Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb”
Jewel Plummer Cobb is a distinguished biologist and former university administrator who did groundbreaking research on cell biology and skin cancer. Between 1967 and 1975, she served as Dean of the College and professor of zoology at Connecticut College. The granddaughter of a freed slave who became a pharmacist, she has helped reduce barriers to women and minorities in the sciences, engineering and mathematics.
